This week in class, we learned about different government spending. We mainly learned about the mandatory and discretionary government spending programs. I thought it was very interesting to learn about how much we spend on different things. I was very surprised that the government spends so much on welfare, social security, medicare, and medicaid . The mandatory spending is required by law and makes up more than 50% of federal spending. Discretionary spending has to approved each year, and can change. National defense is our largest discretionary expenditure, which makes up over 50% of discretionary spending. I thought it was very interesting to learn about all of these, and learn the difference between the two.

I also think it was interesting to learn about. I've always wondered how the government spends our taxes and why there is such a dispute about where they go. Federal budgets seem difficult to manage and I never realized how much of a leader we need to figure out where the spending goes.
